10 — Questions

Common questions

What kind of boats does Vaughn Bay Customs build?

Vaughn Bay Customs builds welded aluminum mini and river jet boats — the VB12 (a 12.5 ft inboard jet) and the VB14 (a 14 ft hull, 16 ft LOA). Both are in-house designs, available hull-only or as a complete turnkey build.

How much does a Vaughn Bay Customs jet boat cost?

The VB12 starts at $65,000 and the VB14 at $70,000 — and those are fully powered, turnkey prices, not bare hulls. Final pricing depends on power, layout, seating, and options, so every build is quoted individually. A turnkey VB12 show boat is also currently available for $85,000 with a new Tuff Trailer included.

Can I buy just the hull, or do you build the whole boat?

Both. Every model is offered hull-only — a completed, welded aluminum hull ready for your own drivetrain and rigging — or fully turnkey, with engine, pump, steering, electrical, seating, and finish, water-tested and ready to run.

What engines and drive do the boats use?

Vaughn Bay Customs rigs Yamaha marine powerplants on jet-pump drives, from a 1.9L HO (200HP base) up to a 1.8L SVHO tuned to 300+HP. There is no outboard or propeller — the jet pump lets the boats run shallow, technical water.

How shallow can a Vaughn Bay Customs jet boat run?

On plane, these boats run in mere inches of water. With a jet pump instead of a propeller or outboard, there is nothing hanging below the hull to strike bottom, so they get into skinny, rocky, technical water that would stop a prop boat.

How is the hull protected from rocks?

The bottom is built to take a beating — a 3/8-inch Delta pad backed by a full 1/2 inch of UHMW skid protection. It shrugs off rock strikes and lets the hull slide over sand and gravel bars instead of gouging or hanging up.

What keeps stones from damaging the jet pump?

A stomp grate over the intake blocks stones from reaching the pump. If the intake ever does plug, the driver can quickly clear it right from the stern — no need to get in the water or beach the boat.

Can I drive standing up?

Yes. A finger throttle and a tilt helm let you control the boat effectively whether you are seated or standing — useful for reading skinny water and picking a clean line through obstacles.

What is the range and storage like?

A 34-gallon fuel tank gives plenty of range for extended-day and remote-water adventures, and there is generous storage throughout the engine compartment for gear. Every boat is also USCG certified.

Where are the boats built, and do you ship?

Every hull is welded, wired, rigged, and water-tested in-house at the Vaughn Bay Customs shop in Vaughn, Washington. Boats are sold direct to the buyer — no dealer network — and shipped throughout the United States and Canada. Shop visits are by appointment.

How do I start a build?

Configure a VB12 or VB14 in the online builder to pick your platform, power, and options, then send it over for a quote built around your exact spec. You can also contact the builder directly by phone at (253) 680-9507 or through the contact form.
